Hidden Qualities that Predict Success in Leadership (Part 1/3)

This article is the first of a 3 part series on leadership qualities.

Some obvious inherent traits make a person suitable for leadership, such as confidence, communication skills, charisma, etc.

Nevertheless, other peculiarities are not so evident but they are signs of outstanding leadership potential.

To discover these latent qualities you should answer the following questions personally and as honestly as possible.

SELF-CONTROL

  • Have you ever conquered a bad habit?

To be a leader, you must lead yourself and master your appetites.

  • Have you ever independently learnt a skill?

Independently mastering a skill indicates diligence, mental strength and fortitude.

  • Do you remain relaxed when things go wrong?

A calm mind is precious, and it is a result of long and patient effort in self-control.

Calmness indicates seasoned experience. However, when you lose control in difficult situations, you forfeit your authority and the respect of people around you.

RESOLUTION

The word resolution, in this context, is described as the quality of being determined or firmly convinced about something.

  • Do you think independently?

Leaders must integrate the ideas of others to make the best decisions, take the initiative, and cannot wait for everyone else before they make up their minds.

  • Can you handle criticism and learn from it?

A leader is not deterred by negative feedback but is humble enough to learn from correction, even the harshest criticism.

  • Can you bounce back from disappointment and turn it into an opportunity?

A leader must be calm during crisis moments and resilient in disappointment.

INFLUENTIAL

  • Do people respect, readily cooperate with you, and place confidence in you?

Being able to quickly earn the respect of others indicates that your character is noticeable and endearing to those around you.

  • Can you exert discipline without being offensive?

In true leadership, there is no external show of force. It is an internal quality of the spirit that others cannot contend with.

  • Are you a peacemaker?

A great leader is an excellent communicator and can reconcile with opponents. He/she makes peace resolves conflicts in hostile environments.
