Five Essentials for Team Leadership
Leading a team is not easy.
It’s a saying that it is easier to lead a herd of goats than to lead a team of individually-minded people.
Not only is it tough to lead, but it is also even more challenging to lead a team successfully: to achieve goals and milestones.
Nevertheless, the following are some essentials. If applied, they can help any leader achieve great results while leading a team.
#1
Finding the right place for team members
A great team leader can find the correct position for every team member. To find the right niche for each member means that, as a team leader, you have spent time getting to know the members of your team. You are then able to position them in the place where they will be most successful. You set them up for success.
#2
Dealing with the weak link
This is not an easy matter. Good leaders desire to see the best in everyone they lead, so it is not painless to weed out the weak link(s) in a team. No matter where you place the weak, the weak link will still be a weak link.
Most leaders would likely move the weak link around in the team rather than deal with the pain of removing the inadequate member. A team leader needs to identify and deal with the weak link.
#3
Sustaining momentum
It is harder to start moving than it is to maintain motion. However, the mistake is to think that you can coast when there is momentum. But in actuality, energy is still needed to sustain momentum.
Therefore, the team leader must keep up the energy required to conserve momentum. The leader should be aware of the team dynamics to understand when to capitalize on the team spirit.
#4
Have a winning attitude
There is a saying that: Your attitude determines your altitude. Therefore, attitude is vital, and it is also contagious. Like a rotten apple, a negative character in a team can contaminate the whole basket. A good spirit is also infectious.
#5
Keep the team accountable
A team leader should have a way to assess the team’s progress. Like a scoreboard, it should provide information about the team’s progress in reaching the target.
Furthermore, guided by the scoreboard, the team leader must make adjustments to the team strategy to ensure success.
The winning team is not the team that makes the least mistakes: the winning team is the team that adjusts the fastest.
