When Is God Too Busy to Listen to You?

LORD, you seem so far away when evil is near!

Why do you stand so far off as though you don’t care?

Why have you hidden yourself when I need you the most?

Psalm 10:1 –TPT

As a believer, I am sure that you have gone through days you’ve felt that God was not listening to you.

Not only does it seem like He’s not listening, but you’ve also probably wrestled with the thought of whether He takes notice of you and your situation.

If you haven’t, sadly, those days will surely come (it is not a curse, it’s the truth).

It could be seasons when you’re praying, hoping, and waiting for a miracle, or it could be moments when you are dealing with loss or disappointment.

Those dark days are tough and can bring dejection as you struggle to understand why God seems so silent and distant.

Does God even know I exist?

Does He care about me?

What does He think about me?

Does He hear my prayer?

These are a few of the question that I’ve struggled with during my dark days, and they, with a host of others like them, assault the mind, weaken the spirit, and break confidence.

When is God “too busy” to listen to you?

The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry.

Psalm 34:15 –KJV

The truth is God is never far from those He loves and those who love Him: the righteous.

Even on your worst days, God is waiting with you in the Pain, and if you allow Him, He will take on the struggles, hurts, and heartaches.

The LORD doesn’t respond to the wicked, but he’s moved to answer the prayer of his godly lovers.

Proverbs 15:29 –TPT

Therefore, the right question is…

Who is God “too busy” to listen to?

If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:

Psalm 66:18 –KJV

The people that should be concerned are:

  • The disobedient – When you consistently disregard God’s instructions, you can be sure that God will not regard you.
  • Sinners, the wicked – God has no time for those who have no time for Him – those who don’t love Him or seek to do His will. He is too busy for those who are too busy for Him.
  • The proud – Pride drives God away. Not only does He refuse to respond to the proud, He resists (actively opposes) them, but He gives grace to the humble.

The lyrics of this song by Don Moen captures the message. God is never far away from those He loves and who love Him in return.

Singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs is the remedy for moments of dejection and despair.

I Will Sing

by Don Moen

Lord, You seem so far away
A million miles or more,
It feels today
And though I haven’t lost my faith
I must confess right now
That it’s hard for me to pray

But I don’t know what to say
And I don’t know where to start
But as You give the grace
With all that’s in my heart

I will sing,
I will praise,
Even in my darkest hour
Through the sorrow and the pain
I will sing,
I will praise,
Lift my hands to honour You
Because Your word is true,
I will sing

Lord it’s hard for me to see
All the thoughts and plans
You have for me
Yes it is
But I will put my trust in You
Knowing that you died
To set me free
Oh thank God You did
But I don’t know what to say
And I don’t know where to start
But as you give the grace
With all that’s in my heart

I will sing,
I will praise,
Even in my darkest hour
Through the sorrow and the pain
I will sing,
I will praise,
Lift my hands to honour You
Because Your word is true
I will sing,
I will praise,
Even in my darkest hour
Through the sorrow and the pain
I will sing,
I will praise,
Lift my hands to honour You
Because Your word is true,
I will sing, I will sing, I will sing
